Y'all are probably tired of this stuff. I'll have to knock off until they breed. Hooked up the RO tonight so here in a week their water should be as soft as a baby's bottom!!

Di you hook it up to your system???

Yup. It's dripping 75 GPD of pure RO right into the tank. I'm essentially doing 60% daily water changes with the RO.

I have never used RO, and am by no means an expert or anything, but I have read that there are a few things (trace elements, etc) that you MUST add back to the water when using RO. What are you doing for this? Or have you found a way around that?

Sweet Lents by the way. My jaw literally dropped when I scrolled down to the pic. No kidding!
:jaw:

yeah but its nice crap! keep us updated. i personally would like all the details water params, diet, etc that lead up to the big event if you are lucky enough for it to happen.

so when you have the RO unit dripping fresh water in-what takes old water out? how does a system like this work? anybody?

as it drips in, it raises water level, which then in turn goes out of a hole somewhere in the tank. really dripping is insanely easy if you just get it plumbed correctly.

I've seen automatic water change systems that use a simple overflow box to let the excess water drain off. I need to set up something like that, since I have inherited a few R/O units!

Also, there are various remineralization products, like Seachem Equilibrium, to put back the essentials.

Get tired of those fish? Are you crazy? Very beautiful lents!

I've run my tank with the straight RO in the past and had no problems. To answer a few questions:

1. I do not reconstitute the water with any chemicals or minerals. These fish come from very nutrient poor waters anyway. Too add, fresh fish do not remove vitamins or minerals from the water so they are not in danger of "missing out" on certaion nutrients required to live healthy.

2. I have a sump on the tank. In the back of the sump i have drilled a hole and fitted it with a bulkhead. This bulkhead is plumbe to a drain line that runs through the wall, into the basement and down a floor drain. The RO water drip into the tank and and the resultant overflow ends up in the sump and down the drain.

3. The biggest concerns with straight RO is the possibilty of pH crash. The pH crash is due to an excess of carbon dioxide in the water. I avoid this 3 ways:
- I have a trickle filter which is very good at off gassingand getting rid of the CO2
- I have ver high circulation in the tank which also add to the off gassing.
- I have 75 gallons on new water entereing the tank on a daly basis. This water is devoid of CO2.

Since the system was running with tap water it will take a bout a week for the RO unit to completely flush out my high pH, hard as rock water. Once the new parameters are set I'll post them here.

Oh, and thanks for all the compliments!! I LOVE these guys!!
