I was wondering if a San Diegan MFK'er would help me out with something. My brother lives in San Diego and I'm going to visit him from Jan 28th to Feb 19th. He has asked me to set up a tank for him, so I'm trying to get one organized.

I basically wanna get it set up as soon as I get there so that it can cycle and I can hopefully stock it before I leave. The space he has is 35" so I'm thinking 30" (2.5') to be safe. I would like as much height and width as possible so as to have a larger volume. His wife is also quite particular about the way things look about the house, so it has to look good with a matching cabinet and preferrably hood as well.

Ultimately I'd like to find a fairly cheap second hand setup that includes the tank, cabinet, hood, lighting and filtration. I will also need suggestions on the best places to buy the fish when the time comes, but I'll start another thread about that.

Anyone want to help a fellow MFK'er and confessed fish addict out? :D

depends on what fishes you want... there are several places here in sd, where will you be staying at in sd?

I'm gonna get some smaller African cichlids. Not my personal favorite, but they're nice and colorful and I think they will be good for this tank.

My starting point is the tank though cos I can't start planning what to stock and where to buy until I know how big it is ... so any help on that would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply though mt! :D

He lives in West University Avenue ... no. three hundred and something ;)

There's a place on university and euclid called Nina's Aquarium, their stock isn't that great but they do have some pretty cool stuff... ;) OH! They do have your africans there but the price might not be what you want them to be, you can also bargain with them - well atleast I always do :D .

Next - If you are willing to travel, pet kingdom down on sports arena blvd has a better selection of stuff but yet again their prices aren't great as well... they might also have a few oddballs.

If you want to see a great selection of fish I suggest you go to Aquatic Warehouse on complex st. off of clairemont mesa blvd. They have a pretty good selection of freshwater fish as well as some oddballs here and there. Just to let you know - their employees are on commission-based pay so they will try to sell you fish as the listed price but you can always bargain them down a bit :D

Good Luck! If you have any questions you can send me a pm, I'll be glad to help you out!

*If you want cheap stuff, like the reg. african cichlids - there is P3TCOs and P3TSMARTs near where you're staying at too.

Thanks bro ... that's some good info!

3 groups: 4 Yellow labs, 3 Cynotilapia afra, and 3 Ruby Red Peacocks or Red Empress. For the afra and peacocks or empress, get a group of 1m/2f. The Labs are harder to sex, but if you can get 1m/3f. You might still have room for some Syno petricolas (about 3), which only get about 4 inches....and they are not Malawian, but can be successfully kept with Malawi cichlids.

I founf the above on another site and I'm thinking of something similar. Where do you think I could get them?

Thanks again! :D

Cool ... thanks bro! :D

Does anyone know what would be the best way to get the tank? Should I just get one from one of the aboe LFSs (price?) or should I go second hand?

like they said aquatic wherehouse, pet kingdom(there pricey though)...theres fountains on la mesa blvd....goldfish world on kerny mesa road....((i think)).....ummmm....theres a spot i go 2 called mikes aquariums in spring valley...goodluck!!!
