Hey guys and gals,
So I'm planning on changing the substrate in my 300 from gravel to sand...the only thing that concerns me is that the sand will get into the (2) FX5's I have running on the tank...any helpful suggestions....
Thanks in advance!
John

what kind, of sand & how low is ur intake? i run a sump and two additional hob filters for the hell of it in my pbass tank and im using silica pool filter sand..never had issues and my growout tanks only a 125, wich is alot smaller then urs.

I have a 125, FX5, pool filter sand. Cleaned the filter 2 days ago and had no sand in it. My intake is about 10" off the sand. I have a 6" RTC and a few pacus. My sand gets stirred all the time. Go for it. you'll love it!

Really it will be a decesion you will have to make. Yes it will get in the Fx5 yes that will mean you will need to do extra cleaning or sand removal very often. I have used three different sand setups and the same result damaged filters.

The larger the Cichla the harder the feed 100% sand in the filter no mater how I the inlet. But I also say try it for sure I am sure you will figure something out.

Sand is all i use in my tanks much easier to deal with ..HCR is right big Cichla stir things up ..One thing my 675 its overflows are 3 feet up and i have not had any sand problem in filtration but that is 3 feet up and the sand rarely gets stired up more then a foot ....

thanks guys, yeah my big guys I'm sure will stir it up like crazy...trying to go for a natural look in the tank ya know...I was thinking of putting the inputs up higher at least 1.5 ft ...and maybe putting some rocks and plants more toward the back so the sand won't get back there as much (wishful thinking i know lol) and also putting a sponge cover over the input...what do you think?
and pool filter sand is less fine correct?
thanks everyone!!!

I went with something between sand and gravel it never really gets stirred up and has all the positives of sand

It is a coarse quartz sand, I have had no issues with it with the rays or anything else
