What sand is best? I've heard many people run pool filter sand. Is sand in general hard on filters? Thanks

Depends on your stock. Generally speaking, pool filter sand is best and most economic. If you have fish that like to dig, maybe a bigger grained sand/gravel would be better to save the filters.

I clean mine with a Python. You have to restrict the flow if you start pulling out too much sand.
