It seems as though most others use aspen shavings as bedding for their king snakes, but I was wondering if I could use sand. Is this advisable (and specifically what types of sand are okay for use with king snakes)? I have some black Tahitian Moon sand left over from setting up and aquarium. Would it be okay to use with my snake or could it result in complications?

I use sand for my pine and gopher snakes without a problem. some people think that it makes them more prone to infection and prolapse but I have never heard of anyone who has actually had this happen because of the sand.

you will be fine with sand

I always heard that they can get intestinally impacted from accidentally ingesting it, but I'm not sure. I use wood shavings and airy soil for my Garter

They would really have to take in a lot for that to happen though...

(S)he is fed in a separate plastic tub (and not in its housing enclosure), so ingestion shouldn't be a problem at all.

Has anyone every had any problems with sand causing irritation to their snakes' bellies? I've read articles mentioning the possibility of this, but I've never met a person who has experienced it first hand.

I would be more conserded about the kind of sand your using, play sand it should be ok, kings face that in the wild all the time but I dont know how it would react to that fancy sand.

Dont forget that is often a marketing manuver, they also say exacly that about calci sand and corn knops wich are 2 things that are hard to qualify as safe for most animals. If the sand is artificialy colorated it is higly not advisable to use it.
