Hey Everyone,

So I just heard on the News that some places are giving away free sandbags since there are storms going on out here. Could I give these sandbags a good rinse and use the sand for my fish tank? or does it contain harmful contaminants? Or am I just being cheap

Dude, just buy the sand. People are out bagging that sand because of bad weather.
It's good to be thrifty, but that is taking it too far.

I would be concerned the sand my have chemical or other contaminants in it. If it was by chance intended for de-icing roads who knows what could be in it?

Usually the sand, or dirt, for sand bags is whatever they dug up. They dont go and buy high quality sand for these uses. Theyre probably recycling what they removed from elsewhere. You dont know what youre getting. That aside, c'mon dude. Is the sand worth your dignity? People are trying to save their homes.

I don't think it's thrifty - I think it's unethical to use materials that could safe other people's homes for a fish tank.

I've done some douche bag things in my days, but...

Anyway, maybe it's just a local thing but here they give away the sand bags for free and you get to fill them.
