I'm just setting up my first large tank now, I'm going to put a sand base with 2 Amazonian looking plants in there. First of all, I'm wondering if the 65 LB bags of sand I have for mixing mortar in my basement will work for the tank, or do I need some kind of special aquarium sand? Also, it would be great if somebody could point me at some Amazonian plants that can get to be about 1 foot tall and not invade the tank.

makes sure the sand doesnt have qualities that would cause it to harden, and eventually become like rock, ive heard some types of play sand have this problem. probably can be avoided by occasional stirrings. or a larger grain size.

you dont want very fine grain sand as it will cloud very fast.

wash your sand in a bucket(recommended for any new substrate), you will quickly see if the sand is usuable for water applications.
if its impossible to take the cloudiness out with losing the majority of the sand its not usable(but i guess its really how much your willing to wash, as i suppose you could still have a little usable.).

so put sand in bucket, add water, stir a bit. pour off cloudy water. add new water repeat.
warning: with some substrates(even big grain ones) this process can take along time.

amazon biotope(plant recommendations) info http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquarium/amazon.php

big fish i have some swords in regular paving sand(like play sand but for big kids), there growing just fine with the addition of root tabs.im sure the majority plants would work fine in sand and root tabs.

My Amazon swords are okay in sand, but just be careful not to cover them too high up the base. I leave the tops of the roots at the stem sticking out. They tend to turn to mush otherwise.

thanks for the info

I used play sand for a while worked decent for my swords and cheap (3.50 a bag) you could try pool filter sand as well.
