My title sums it up. I have a black sand bottom, which up until 2 weeks ago I had no problems. Is it just me or are some of these black sands metallic based, as in is will stick to a magnet? I have 2 C4 fluvals currently and the left one has died 2x. My larger Texas Cichild only recently has begun getting mouthfuls of sand and spitting them. I noticed my motor has seized up a few times, ones burnt out entirely... Not fun. There filter never sucked up much if any sand in the past. Do you think I can add a black/greyish gravel and mix with the sandy bottom to aide in less loose sand particles?

Following up to that I'm looking at an fx5 soon myself. will this sand issue possibly be a future problem?

My Texas (the root of the issue) is sold off this week as well. So I should be greatly reduced.

Thanks in advance

I run fx5 w/ pfs intake strainer 2" off substrate and no probs here!

sorry to sound like a nub, what is a pfs intake strainer. i get the concept but what is it? it blocks sand size particles id assume?

ok i see how that would help, how is that setup though? inserted into a pvc fitting prior to the fx5?

My tank is half black sand and half pfs. The pfs doesn't get sucked up the intake of my fx5. It's too heavy.

isnt the PFS pre filter sponge, hows your tank half sand and half pfs. you mean gravel?

i think that pre filter sponge will do the job at blocking the sand though.

PFS=Pool Filter Sand?

I have pool filter sand in my tank and i have 2 fx5s my Oscar spits sand in to the intake all the time, i have never not found sand in my canisters when i clean them out.
I have had my fx5s for over 4 years now and never had a problem, the only part i have replaced is the foam inserts and not because of the sand.
