I was woundering how many people have are have had sand bottom tanks for thier fresh water tanks?? I currently have a sand bottom tank thats been set up for 2 years. I keep hearing how bad sand bottom tanks are for the water and wasteis this true??? Sofar I have had no problems. I have currently a planted discus tank 75 gallons and 75 gallon fresh water ray tank with 3 rays.

I have sand in all my tanks, I love it and I have had not problem. As long as you have fish that stir it up for you your set. I think it looks better than gravel personally, but some would disagree. I have really fine stuff to and I rarly get it in the filters and I have rays too. I think it is a good substrate.

I use non silcone based playsand for my tanks ....I get a 50 pound bag for $4.00 at home depot. It is real fine and clouds up the tank for a few days and truns the water orange but it does not bother anything in the tank... I luv the stuff. What do you use?????

why would it be bad for your water? Crap usually sits ON the sand I have, natural sand, rather than being embedded in it à la gravel.

I use quickcrete playsand from Lowes. Depending on the time of year it is anywhere from $2 to $5 for a 50lb bag. I just rinse it in a bucket to get all of the dust out. I just rinse it till the water runs clear and don't get any clouding. I love my stuff as well and my cichlids and rays seem to love it as much as me.

I have sand in a couple tanks. I have tried play sand but it was a little too fine for my liking, so I switched to pool filter sand. I like it a lot better, and the fish seem to love it:)
