I know with sand as the substrate in aquariums, you want to occasionally thoroughly sift completely through all the sand incase of the gas pockets that can form over time.

I've had sand in my tank for a few weeks now, and was just curious as to how often I should completely sift through the sand to prevent those 'pockets' from forming? Weekly? Every month? every few months?

Thanks!

Once every few months, it all depends on how thick your sub is, only real thick stuff 1-6" needs to be stirred. Every few months when I do a wc I take my hand and stir one side, next few months the opposite side.

Everytime I do a water change and is returning the water, I point my hose towards the sand hence stirring it. Would not take too long before the water becomes cloudy but the filter will then do its job.

Leave it alone completely. The gas pockets are harmless and they will eat your nitrates. Go about 5" deep, add some blackworm and scuds, tunneling snails to scoot nutrients around and you're good to go.

In my moray tanks I mix up the sand every waterchange. My fimbriated moray likes to burry his poop sometimes.

Interesting.. from what I was told the gas pockets could be harmful to your fish.

My sand is a solid even 1" thick throughout the entire tank.

Iv always heard they were bad aswel. It would be nice if someone found a link that actualy explains more in depth about these gas bubbles.
