Ok I have 2 tanks...one tank has pool sand the other has smaller pebbles. when i clean the pebble tanki see with my eyes all the dark crap being sucked up...as in left overs and poop or whatever else...when i clean my sand tank i dont see the same thing...i dont see the dark particles being sucked up. how do people vaccum there sand effectively? thanks for the advice guys

I just run the vac close to the sand to suck up the junk. But i also noticed that sense i added sand to the tank that the poop and other large junk seems to not rest on the bottom but gets sucked up in the filters. I clean out my fiber filters atleast 2 times a week as there is alot more stuff trapped in them now.

Unlike pebbles or gravel, debris won't go into the sand it rests on top. And match that with current in the tank all the matter you want suck up will be around and under any decor you have in the tank. Try lifting rocks/driftwood etc in there.

Also, i find that using 5/8" tubing straight into a bucket works best. Very easy to control and you can suck up minimal sand. It can be tricky with smaller fish though as it will suck up anything that gets close.

i had black sand in my tank. there was too many bio waste in the sand. Every time i did a water change i had to stir it, in order to siphoned the waste out. Eventually i got tired of it, so now my tank is bare bottom.
