Quick question. Just added sand to my tank and its about a 6 inch visability. Do you think bass would be ok in this sand cloud? It should settle at some piont.

I would be worried it would coat their gills. I personally wouldn't risk it, but maybe somebody knows better.

Ya I am a little worried about putting them in there just yet.

By the way your 600gal tank is awesome!

If you haven't put them in there yet then don't. Did you wash this sand at all ?

Wait it out before you put them in there. Let things settle a bit.

Thank you. :)

In order to speed things up a little on getting the silt out of my tank, I used a flocculate by Kent. The silt was so fine, it was just passing through all my filter pads and socks and I sure didn't want it messing up my pump. So, since I didn't have fish in there, I opted to go ahead and use it (although they claim its okay to use while the fish are in the tank). Amazing how much faster it cleared up, and it was remarkably better within just a few hours. The moment I bumped the filter material though, it would send silt everywhere. So, I drained the sump with the pump on to just before it started sucking air, and drained the rest of it via siphon. That way the silt stayed on the filter material. I rinsed the filter material really well, and replaced it. I stirred up the the sand again and redosed with the flocculate. I stirred it up three times, though only dosed twice. When I was done, I put in carbon to absorb and of the chemical left. This was all done within about 2 days. There was still a little bit of the silt left that would get stirred up by my cats sifting through it, but it was a fairly small amount in comparison to the beginning.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I did clean the sand and as of this morning it looks better but not perfect. After work I am going to do a water change and possibly cleans the filter pump.

While not great for them I doubt it will cause any harm. There are some products you can add to take away the coudiness. What it does is actuall bond to the particles of they sink....if that makes sense. Then vacuum it out. Usua Poly fill in your filters too that will help.

If your fish are in there and you have no other place to keep them they'll be fine. If they're not in there yet, I wouldn't add them.

There's no way that 'sandstorm' is worse than whats gets churned up for 2 or 3 days after a hurricane passes through. Catfish live in the bottoms of the nastiest muddiest rivers in the world. If their gills were incapable of filtering out some mud, they'd have died off eons ago.

Not that there's a need to uselessly subject them to any undue stress. The water we provide to our fish is a paradise compared to what they'd all be living in if they were wild. (Which may be some slight way to make up for keeping them in such a confined space)
