While setting up my 55g tank, (its long not tall) i rinsed out my play sand for about 10-15 minutes then added it to the tank, i expected it to be cloudy but how long will this take to settle? (Hours? Days?) i am not running any filtration from fear of damaging my equipment and their are no fish/decorations in the tank at the moment.

thanks for the reply, can you tell me what you mean by floss and should i keep the cartridges in the filter when it is running?

I got a 50lb bag of play sand from Home depot and put it in my 150 this past weekend... my water did not cloud, you might've needed a few more rinses..

Since the sand is already in your tank, I would rubber band some of the poly material to the intake if you are using a HOB filter. If it's a canister, I would put extra poly material on the bottom of the filter so it could catch all the loose sand particles before if goes to the top to the impeller...

water changes help a ton. If you don't have fish in your tank I would do 2 -3 water changes before turning on a filter. Heck, just keep doing water changes all day if you want. It helps to get rid of a lot of the floating small particles you don't want fish breathing. With water changes your sand should settle and the water should settle in a couple hours.

thanks for the responses, would a peice of sock or shirt work to screen my intake for now, i'm in college and can't get to my car till tonight and i want to do something as soon as i can, also when i pour water into it during water changes won't this kick the silt up again?

sure will, this is good helps the smaller pieces you want out seperate just do another water change and another on the final tank fill up put a big plate on the bottom of the tank and pour water into it.
