Well I just finished setting up a 45# sand filter on my 220 and I got to say I love this thing. Crystal clear water, and I can backwash the filter and do a water change at the same time. All in less than 30 minutes. (5 minutes to backwash and drain tank and 25 minutes to refill). Who else runs a sand filter on here?

Not to many people huh? I dont know why, 1000gph and about the same cost (with DIY bio tower) as an FX5.

Get me the specs what you exactly have setup and such I would love to see it all. Links where to find the said filter. What pump you running.

I am running a 1/5 hp sand filter I got off ebay, with a 50/50 mix of pool filter sand and zeosand. Plumbed into a DIY biotower made from 4" DWV pipe. The tank is in my living room and the sand filter is a little bit loud so I plumbed in a 1000gph catalina pump to run just the biotower when I need the tank to be quiet. I also added a airline quick coupler to the bottom of the tower to clean it real good with my air compressor, as well as a chamber at the top for carbon or what ever. I have been planning it for quite a while but it was really very simple when I finally got to it.

Wow that sounds like allot of setup. I'm going to need pics. And I want pics. I love filter setups. Is the pump not powerful enough to backwash it really well or why the added air valve? Just because?

I will try and get pics. The pump backwashes the sand filter great. The compressor is for cleaning out the biotower.

I havent forgotten about the pictures. I had a brilliant idea to move the bio tower into the tank and run it off powerheads and save some $ on electricity. As soon as I finish it and get it hidden I will post pictures.
