Hey all, I was wondering what the best type of sand is for use in a freshwater tank . I'm hoping to set up my75 gal into a cichlid and catfish tank

Thanks!

What kind of cichlids? Are you looking for a sand that is PH inert? Your going to get flooded with pool filter sand suggestions.... If you want something way BETTER than PFS that is PH inert, try the stuff in the picture. Use Google to find it and track it down.

I have used generic FW sand, pool filter sand, quickrete media sand and this stuff. This is by far my favorite. Let me know if you want to see a pic of it in the tank. I have been running about 400 lbs or so in different tanks for over a year with my geos.

Play sand is cheap. Just wash it well or it will cloud your tank for awhile. Some use pool sand since I believe it is pre-washed.

OP you need some good ole Pool Filter Sand. :)

I went with the expensive and impatient route and purchased some carib sea ivory coast sand a few years back. Its really fine and was clean when I purchased it. I must say though that it is really great stuff. It has also not effected any of my impellers or filtration equipment

Play sand varies allot depending on manufacturer. It can be mud or a nice grain size none the less is really messy and you have to wash it REALLY well. Most PFS even if "pre-washed" (I have never gotten any pre-washed) still has to be washed really well.

Show me some PFS that looks better than this :grinno: everybody spends so much money on set up and fish but cheaps out on sand, why? You will be looking at it for a long time. Why not get something that looks/performs the best?

Sand is sand is sand to me. I'm not too picky. It does look good though.

That's why I asked the OP what kind of cichlids. If your keeping SA or geos like I do the sand is really important. If he is keeping africans for example all of this is null and void lol since they'll need argonite or some other type of PH buffering sand. Thanks for the compliment BTW :D

Pool Filter Sand is awesome, just got a 50lb bag at Leslies Pool supplies for $12 bucks, it is not pre washed though, took me awhile and still some cloudiness to the water.

I'm new to cichlids as well, but I am interested in Blue Johannis, Gold Head Comps, Peacocks, and Frontosas (even tho I know a 75 wont be big enough for them, but the plan is to buy a 150 next year) . As far as the catfish go I want: Pictus, Columbians, Banded Shovelnose, and Bagroides melapterus. I wish I could do bigger fish, but alas, that'll have to wait til I can afford a massive tank. So does that change your opinion on type of sand, and btw ( I know wrong forum ) but any opinion on the cohabitation of these types? THX so much already for the comments
