I would like to know this as well. I am thinking of changing over my planted tank to full sand. I currently have river pebbles.

Not sure about the paving sand, but yes, you can use playsand. I have before, and lots of people do. I do not recommend it if you have HOB filters because it is very light, easily gets in the water column, and will get in your filters, making them loud/ not work anymore.

in my experience pool filter sand is much much MUCH easier to work with. i've used both, and the playsand took hours to properly wash out. the pool filter sand just went right in.

Pool filter sand would be best imo, but if you must use the play sand make sure you get it very clean. One way ive done it before is put it in 5 gallon buckets, throw a water hose in and let it run over till the water running over is crystal clear. good luck in whichever you decide to use.

I have used play sand and pool filter sand. The play sand is very dirty, you will need to thoroughly wash it before you use it. The grain size is not very uniform either. I would pay the couple of extra $$ and find yourself some pool filter sand, it is much cleaner and of more consistent quality.
