I just threw away an AquaClear 110 because I couldn't get all the sand out. I spent an hour trying, and I still couldn't get it out. I have Black Diamond blasting sand in my 75 gallon tank, and I can't keep the sand out of the filters. What should I do? I ordered another AquaClear 110, it will be here on friday, right nor I just have an Aqueon 55/75 on the tank. I'm pretty pissed that I couldn't get the sand out of that AquaClear 110.

Couldn't get it out? Out of the media, or what exactly? I've had sand in AQ's over the years, but a quick rinse under a running faucet and good bye sand. Worst case scenario with an AC is funging up an impeller, or impeller shaft, and even that is a pretty quick fix. Pull the motor and change out the part. If I lived closer I'd come dig it out of your garbage. lol

You can order a replacement impeller. Place a sponge on to the end of the intake tube and that will keep sand out.
Yeah, but I also cracked the plastic part of the filter when I was trying to clean it out. I have foam on the other filter. I'm going to use foam on the new filter also.

I'm afraid that with sand and AQ filters there is nothing that will stop 100% of fine sand particles from getting into the impeller well. If you restrict the intake flow too much while attempting to keep out sand, the net result is greatly reduced water turnover. Foam sleeves like the ones in the link work, but are not a 100% guarantee.
