sand grinding

i just put sand in my 29 gallon tank and after i added water i turned my filter on and it started making this grinding noise. should i leet the sand settle for a couple hours is this normal? (its a 75 gallon filter)

No! That means sand is in ur impeller assembley! It will shred it to pieces after awhile! Let sand settle for 3-4 hours and clean filter+magnet/impeller! If that doesnt work try a pre filter asap! You can diy your own by buying a small aquaclear or fluval sponge, but it in a 2"x3" piece and stick it on ur siphon where the water sucks up and that should prevent small sand particles from being sucked up$

To clean it pull filter.off tank pull out media. The impellar is at the end of the intake tube inside filter. Pull it out you will see maginet and impellar rinse those and rinse out filter when you dump the water out you should see the sand keep doing till all gone. Like already stated prefilter will help alot.

The main thing is so the sand is saturated before you put it in the tank so it settles easier

and after cleaning it add a sponge prefilter to your intake or raise it up in your water column. if you dont clean it, the sand will destroy your impeller and possibly more.... speaking from personal experiance.
