NOT play sand. There are 3 types people like.

1) if you want to pay the most get the Black Tahitian moon sand or something like that.
2.) middle price is that quarts stuff, make sure to get the stuff that isn't too small. Found at home depot like stores
3.) Cheapest, pool filter sand or something like that.

Basically just don't get stuff that is so fine grained that it will get in your filters. There is a post about play sand somewhere, read that some.

i use eco-complete cichlid sand and tahitian black in a 2:1 ratio. both i got off foster and smith. the eco-complete will buffer your pH to 8.0.
you can also use any salt water sand, most will buffer. the tahitian black, quarts and silica sand are all good but wont buffer your pH so you'll have to add a buffer

ok but when i am changing my gravel to sand to have to tank out my fish and then scoop out the gravel
do i have to make any water changes after

I do not take the fish out...just becareful not to scoop out fish... I remove all plants and rocks... then gravel... after that I take out 30-40 percent water and then add new sand with water afterwards... make sure to put sand in a bucket and run water and rinse it... just to be safe... but with pool filter sand you should be fine...
