It's seems that some sand has gotten into my AC70. It makes a low grinding sound, it's not too loud but I fear for the impeller and shaft getting worn out. Cleaning out the sand and lubricating the parts shouldn't be too hard. But is there a more permanent solution to this problem? My fish like to play with sand and at times it gets pulled in. I've read about cutting up sponges to put over the intake valve. Not sure how that works or if I'm even doing it right. Anyone have experience with fixing this problem?

wish i could help ya, but that is why I got tired of sand. I had a rowdy fish and that crap was constantly getting into filters, no matter how high or how I moved the intake it was a pain. Messed up a AC110 pretty good when I was away and after that said im good w sand for right now

I've tried the sponges, but the sand will still get in somehow. I've also tried cutting up pantyhose to place over the intakes, and that did not work either. I ended up placing the intake higher and I did not have any problems until I switched to a Magnum 350.

I try to avoid this problem by only using canister filters on my tanks with sand.

I've given up lol
I've cleaned my AC impellers so many times and the next day there is sand.

I have sand in all my tanks and sometimes a little sand seems inevitable especially with big sand blowing cichlids. PFS is pretty good but the smaller grained sands can be a problem like the black moon sand and play sand. I just keep my intakes high and occasionaly will use a mesh filter bag over them if they are getting crazy with redecorating panty hose is too fine and clogs too fast same with sponges. If your using really fine sand it is what it is.
