How does sand go in an aquarium? is it easy to clean? will it burn out my filter? input please!

Haven't had many problems with it, looks amazing, easy to clean for sure, fun to watch fish sift and spit it out for lulz...haven't lost a filter to it yet, can get a little annoying if you get some in there, but it usually takes care of itself. USUALLY...

You just pour it in?

Definitely much easier to clean than gravel.

Depends on your filter. If the pump is before the mechanial media, there is a chance that fine grains of sand could damage the impeller. If the water from the intake has to pass through the media first before reaching the pump, I'm quite certain the mechnical pads would catch those grains before any damage is done. If you are still worry, add a prefilter sponge onto the intake of your filter

you should rinse sand first then add to the tank.

I only will use sand it's cheap looks great and keep the tank clean because all poop and junk sits on top so you can clean it up. with Gravel poop can get stuck and you can never get it out.

When I switch my tank to sand I was so suprised at how much mull and poop was stuck at the bottom because I did a good job cleaning or so I thought.

Yes sand can get in the filter I found it got in my aquaclear and rubbed some grooves in te magnet of the propeller. But it still works.

Sand is the only way to go unless you like bare
bottom tanks. Fish love it because they can move it easy. Not many fish come from
places where it's only gravel. Move rivers and lakes have a
soft bottom not all rocks.

We added crushed coral (both coarse (bottom layer) and fine) to our cichlid tank we've started. Looks awesome. fish actively sift the floor. real nice clean lines. our tank was new when added so can't help there. I did rinse the heck out of it b/c lfs guy warned me about the excessive cloudiness if not. We add touch up sand with a small cup and slowly lower and pour onto site. additionally, crushed coral accents texas holely rock.

thankyou guys for the input! i was looking to put sand in but i didnt want it to damage my filter
