I just got 7 Neolamprologus multifasciatus from a local breeder. Well, they are doing all good but they just broke my filter. They must have tussled in the sand and kicked some sand up into the filter. The filter must have ran to long and the the motor quit. I tried it again and it didnt do anything. Any ideas how to keep sand from getting into the filter propeller?

What brand of filter? You can usually disassemble the filter to gain access to the impeller cavity. Just flush it completely to remove trapped sand grains. Check the impeller for scoring of the magnet.

Tanks that use sand usually require the intake be at least 4" above the substrate level. Some suggest a prefilter sponge over the intake screen and this may work, depending on the sand grain size.

I rinsed the sand out but the motor tried to run to long and must have burnt up. The sand size is probably the smallest, smaller than salt. Will putting a sponge on the intake overrun the pump?

I use sponges over the intakes of a lot of my canister filters. That is what I'd recommend in your situation, in addition to raising the intake tube.
