ok i want to put sand in a 55 and i dont really know how much, i was told around 60 pounds for like one inch of sand? and how high off the sand should the intake for my filter be?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Couple of things to consider.
What kind of sand and how active your fish will be around it.
I used Pool Filter Sand because of it’s weight.
My Africans can move it all over the place and not get it into suspension.
Even with heavy sand, I keep my filter intakes 8 inches off of the sand.
Would be just like my mutts to spit sand right into the intakes, just to mess with my head.

It also depends on what filtration you have.
If its a HOB then make sure you keep the intake up a good distance off the bottom, if its a cannister, it doesn't matter so much as the sand should never make it to the impellar.

This. Also I used pool filter sand in my tanks as well. If I remember right I think it cost $10 for a 50 pound bag. Not a bad deal. I just had to rinse it thoroughly before putting it in the tank.

As said above it depends on your stock,if you have loads of small tetras then it probably doent matter what kind of sand you put in as long as its ok in aquariums, but like kaiser says if you got messy fish get the same sand as him and put the inlet at least 6" off the bottom.

Happy new year.
