I recently pulled the eco complete sand out of my frontosa tank. I replaced it with black estes ultra reef. I hated it! My front's were dark and lacked color. I am not sure I want to put sand back in, as it gets into everything! Filters..etc. What do you guys recommend for substrate? Sand or gravel? What brand, color, etc? Just looking for advice and suggestions. Also if you have picture of your suggestion in your tank, please post it up so I can see it! Thanks in advance.

Here is the tank as it currently sits.

I went from gravel to sand and i am never going back. It is so easy to pick up the debris from the top of the sand and if washed properly, you should have no issues with it at all. What i do to wash it is put it all in the tank without washing it and fill it up with water(it will be cloudy) then do a 95% water change. Of course you might be thinking, that is too much work but i have a water changing hose, the python thing. You should also paint that pvc in the tank black with krylon fusion.

How do you guys keep sand out of your filters?

When I had the eco complete in the tank, I was very careful not to stir the sand too much, and when I cleaned my filters I always find them full of sand...

It all depends on the sand being used, you probably bought some sand from the pet store right.. If you did, the sand from there is too fine and too easy to stir up. Go with some pool filter sand and your set to go. It has heavy grains and some people don't even wash it before putting it in the tank, some just do a water change and done. Try it, i guarantee it will be no more than $10 for a 50 pound bag(unless your getting ripped off) so you have nothing to lose except a little bit of money.

That's a good question as I have the same situation.

I currently have some Frontosas in a tank with black sand and they did get darker. When they were in a white sand tank they were much lighter and colorful. Before that I had them in a natural sand tank. However, they were not as bright as when in the white sand tank. I personally like the look of the black (Tahitian Noon) sand better than the white and natural.

Has anyone found sand in any colors other than black, white, and natural?

Lesile pool filter sand

Do you happen to have a picture of this in one of your tanks.

I am just worried that I will go buy a bag and it will be too light and I won't like it.
