right now i have a planted 30 with two bolivian rams and 12 rummy nose tetras. I know that rams are mini geos so would sand be good for them? If i did change my gravel for sand which would be better for my plants?? would a mixture of the two be best? anyways thanks for the help really appreciate it!!!:nilly:

I prefer sand. Add MTS to aerate the sand thus preventing it from choking the plant roots.

its whatever is more pleasing to your eye. they both have good points and bad points.

Ok. If i had sand would the rams sift the sand? I think they both look good and silica sand is like 6 bux's for a 50 pound bag. also when do Bolivian rams reach maturity??

well i have had my Bolivian Ram for quite awhile and he's about 3.5 in, it matters is your a male or female. to me gravel is more peferable, i cant see the bolivians coloration against the sand. its up to you!

cool thanks. I bought two and ended up getting a male and female. Go-figure lol. I wasn't really trying because there was a million in the tank and you never get the one that took you hours to pick out. Anyways I will try to find a decent camera to post a picture of them. I might end up doing a mixture of sand and gravel.:naughty:

You were using white sand if the colors appeared washed out. Black or brown substrate is much better.

If you end up going with sand, try to get some Flourite Onyx Sand. It will really show off their colors while providing nutrients to your plants.
