Sand or gravel or Bare bottom

i just finally pulled out this acrylic aquarium that was hiding out for years that was put down after my girlfriends red devil died. wondering what to use as a substrate. any suggestions?
 
I have yet to do a tank with sand substrate. I think my next tank I'm gonna give it a try.

When you say gravel are you referring to the super edgy pink gravel etc or a natural gravel? I like pool filter sand. I have it in all my tanks and its great for me. One of my tanks I tossed in some natural pea gravel with the sand and it looks pretty good as well. I would never have colored gravel. I let my daughter have it in her tank and she finally realized how bad it looks....shes 11. She converted to sand on her own:)

Having done sand and gravel, i say sand... Much easier to keep clean and works well for bottom dwellers...
