Sand or gravel?

whether or not to use either sand or gravels is totally up to you. It will depends on how you maintain your tank, I'm sure you realize both consequences. I'm not a fan of both materials for my tank, and I like the look of bare bottom tank as its easier for me to clean the poo and it looks neat. Gravels doesnt work for my tank cause I'm a bichir keeper and all my bichirs are very greedy so they may accidentally swallow them.

Ya thats by biggest problem that i was going to bring up cuz i have bichirs and every one in a while they eat them and have alot of trouble passing them lol thats why i wanted to do sand.. lol alittle easier on the digestive system. bare bottom could be cool to try as well tho. do you use sand for ur bichirs?

There are textured spray paints that look like gravel/sand when sprayed on. As long as you're painting the outside of the tank, most of them will work just fine. You just have to make sure to spray them on evenly and let them dry well before moving things around otherwise the texture gets smeared into random swirls of color.

Most people who see my tanks in person ask me how I manage to keep the sand from swirling up into the water column. You can only tell from up close that it's painted on.

I started going with the bare bottom because of this too. The first bichir I ever owned died at ~12". When he passed I noticed his belly was really lumpy, so I cut him open and found 7 fairly large pebbles in his belly.
