Sand or gravel

Since I prefer natural, I'd say a mix of Black sand and Black gravel.

Plants? In my experience plants prefer grains larger than sand and smaller than gravel, so I usually offer both, as they naturally mix on their own (sand usually sifts downward).

definatly sand. Gravel looks ugly and unnatural. It gets dirty easily from the leftoverfood left over that seeps in. Sand looks 100x better.....trust me LOL.
i used to have blue gravel but I realized it looked ridiculous and it also damages your bichir's fins. If a bichirs swallows a piece of gravel then good luck.

+1 on gravel catching crap. Pain to vac every week, with sand it settles on top and u can net it, all u have to do is stir it once in awhile. Pfs

Your Polys will appreciate sand a lot more than they will gravel. Gravel also requires a little more work to clean.. With sand it's a lot easier.

I think everyone has spoken the obvious winner..

Went sand a few weeks back after 10 years gravel.. sand just looks awesome and fish love it and interact with it

I went with mix, black sand - red gravel. Looks cool but gravel will eventually work its way to top, need to mix it up occassionally. Sand is the way to go if I was doing it again.
