OK I'm setting up a new tank and using sand as substrate. I attempted to rinse the sand in a bucket and the water just kept getting super dark (black sand) finally it started to look clearer and when I added the sand and water to the tank now the whole dank as grey water. Will this settle? Should I drain the water and do it again? Help !! i'm getting so frustrated. Thanks !! :(

Several large water changes will help clear up the particles, but otherwise its just giving it time to settle. All sand does that almost no matter how well you wash it, so you'll just have to deal with it for a bit.

A few WC will help.
My worry would be that Oscar and JD getting the sand stirred up.
You might need to protect that AC50.
What kind of sand did you use?

I had that same problem a few months ago. I never did any water change until the tank cleared up. Just mke sure that you have your filters running! It should settle within a few days. Gool luck with the tank

Hi guys thanks for all the replies and advise. I had to update my tank info so people can see what I'm running now. I'm putting my convict in this new tank with the sand because he's kicking my Oscars butt in the 75 gal. I ended up doing a full water change and then gently added water with the assistance of a plate and it's really 100% better. I'll post a pic so you can see for yourself. I love the black background with black sand look. Thanks again everyone here has been so helpfull !
