sand question

I have a tortoise, I've been using sand for substrate in his enclosure.
I made a switch to coconut fiber and have 40 lbs of pool filter sand leftover (I was told this was okay to use for him) and was wondering if I could use this in my aquarium? Or should I invest in legitimate aquarium sand?

Wash it well in a bucket, with a hose. You're good to go. Lots of us use pool filter sand. It is silicate based and fish safe.
