Anyone who has been in the hobby for a while may remember the marine substrate i think by red sea called reefbase. Basically a sand with rounded oolites, very smooth and relatively coarse, maybe 1-2mm per piece. Im trying to find something like that which is inert for my substrate change. Any reccomendations? Ive heard a lot about different sands and how they act like little daggers, anyone try pool filter sand? What is the smoothest?

I like coarser sand I got this from landscape supply store near my house. It is just coarse quartz sand have used it around a year with no problems really like it. It looks quite a bit lighter in the tank but I really like the natural color with my rays

Go to your local garden center, they usual have tons of different types or sand, gravel, and rocks to choose from. Pick the kind you like then pick the size of bag you want. Personaly I like a mix of sand and rocks to mimick a lake bed or something.

Dont buy from pet stores, they mark up the price soo much. Garden centers or hardware stores are cheap.

they have black and white blasting sand at home depot and menards for just a few bucks a bag (50 lbs) either color looks nice just be sure to rinse it good. a pillow case and a couple buckets work good. i put the sand in the case and run it under the faucet in my laundry sink then dump the clean sand in the buckets. now i use red sand and i think its the filter sand your asking about. i use the 1/8" size. its just a little bigger than fine sand but smaller than gravel. it doesnt get stirred up in filter and is heavy enough to not get sucked up in siphon when cleaning. i like the the red sand the most out of all substrates iv used so far. they do have different sizes rangeing from fine sand to regular size gravel

I use 1/4" peastones/river rocks for the same reason, easy to clean with syphon and doesnt suck up the filters.

I bought two 50 lb bags of 1/4" peastone/river rocks for like 7 bucks a bag at my local garden center. Rocks are smooth as hell as there naturaly from rivers, check a fullsize version of my avatar pic for a better look or my album on the profile page. I highly recommend these as substrate, no issues with gravel syphons or filters. Just rinse them off really good.
