I'm looking for some recommendations on sand. When first setting up our 125 some people on MFK recommended Quikrete all purpose sand and it's the worst substrate I've ever encountered. Yes it has worked for us, it was insanely cheap, it looks natural; but even after cleaning thoroughly it STILL clouded up the water for at least 6 months. We would have a sandstorm/cloud every time a bottom dwelling fish would move. It clogs our eheim filters constantly with sludge and we have to clean the lines at least once a month, and it coats pretty much everything in a layer of dust. The fish looked like they had velvet because even they got coated in this stuff when our sandstorms happened, but everything looks like it's covered in algae and it isn't! Tapping out my fake plants does not even get all the dust off the plants either, I have to take my fingers and rub all the dust off the leaves individually every single week from this stuff.

We're finishing our stand for our 240g this week and are taking the opportunity of having a large tank to stick all the fish into to clean up the 125g. We're resealing it again for safe measure, attempting to fix some scratches I may or may not have made when cleaning the glass with the magnet, and finally removing the rest of this horrible sand! Can anyone recommend a natural looking sand that isn't such a nightmare? I've heard that pool sand is pretty good, does anyone have experience/pictures of it? We'd like to keep the price of the sand as cheap as possible, but would be willing to spend a little more for my sanity's sake.

Can you believe this is how filthy it was after rinsing it? When we put the hose to fill up the tank, all bets were off and the stirring up created this.

after vacuuming the layer of dust that eventually settled every day for 2 weeks, this is the end result

Our dragon goby loved it, but with all his rolling around the water would look like this constantly so we removed him.

as you can see I unintentionally took a photo showing the sand slowly coating everything including the plants, rock, and driftwood. this is over a year with this sand and with regular weekly "dusting"

I have tried every sand I can get in the uk and the only sand I will now use is pool filter sand, it outclasses all the rest by far

I hear it's pretty good, but I heard the same for this quikrete sand as well so I'm skeptical of everything now. What are the pros and cons to this sand and do you have any photos of it?

I use coarse silica sand in all my sanded tanks and I absolutely love it. It is cheap and works great. Just have to make sure you clean it really well before you put it in your tank.

The stuff I used was very coarse and the granules, while all different sizes, were actually quite large as far as sand goes. I believe it was the all purpose we used, but it's possible it was the pool sand (I'm just not sure anymore, we threw out the rest.) What makes coarse silica or the pool filter different than the all purpose? I'm just curious of how each sand differentiates itself from one another so I can make an educated choice on a product.

Pool filter sand. It's a bit light in color but the large grains are great. It sinks fast when stirred up and you can pretty much vacuum it like gravel without having to worry about sucking it all out. It's not as cheap as the quickcrete but it isn't as expensive as some of your other sands like the black tahitian moon sand (which is a whole separate pain in the butt). The only thing I would recommend is that you take the time out to thoroughly wash it. I was working in a hurry when I set mine up. It made my water cloudy but it settled in a few days. In the end, I've tried all of your common suggestions aside from playsand and it is my favorite.

After it's been given a good rinse it never clouds up the water n even if it's not rinsed thoroughly enough it will still settle after a few hours, the grains if disturbed sink very quickly unlike most other sands iv used. Think of it more like gravel with the same grain size as sand, that's the best way I can describe it. The pics are when I 1st poured it in and the tank was still almost full so it had to sink from top to bottom and this is as cloudy as it got, all I did was rinsed it threw a few times in a bucket before adding it, hope this helps

Awesome! your photos are actually very helpful! Looks like I'll be trying some pool filter sand.

Here's what mine looks like close up

I believe it was the all purpose

you can see the fine dust collecting up over here. I vacuum and pull up the sand regularly and this still happens after over a year of thoroughly cleaning it

Here's what the sand looks like on my decorations after 6 day! we cleaned the tank thoroughly last friday. I mean, we literally removed everything from the tank, scrubbed and gave it a good cleaning. I clean the plants every week, but we do these more intense cleanings once a month and it STILL collects like this. Do you guys see this with the other sands?

Here is a pic of my 120 tall with the coarse silica sand. The grains a very universal in size and color. Also it does not cloud up the water. This picture was taken right after a water change so the detritus is a little stirred up.
