I have a JD that has got its self a whole tank to its self after some naughty behavior. It started out as a tropical fish tank with gravel and plants. Well the plants didn't last very long as I had expected. The question I have is I want to pull the gravel out and put sand in. Can you just get any common bags of sand? Do you have to rinse? I want to go with sand but would have to start buying lottery tickets to afford the bags of aquarium sand at the local fish joint.

Pool Filter Sand is great and cheap. You can find 50lb bags at Home Depot for $10. It is heavy enough to not easily get sucked up by a python hose, but fine enough for fish to dig and sift through. You do have to rinse it though. I use it in one of my tanks and I have had no problems. When I set up my new tank I will use Pool Filter Sand mixed with a darker sand to break up the white color.

I cant find PFS at Lowes or Home Depot by me, so had to find a Pool store in the Yellow pages. Was about $15 there. Very clean and I didnt have to rinse at all. Usually white in color.

I got Paver's sand from Lowes in another tank. Totaly different look. More brown and is course sand with larger pebbles mixed in. Was very dirty and needed lots of rinsing. I like it alot though.

Cichlid sand at Petsmart is around 40$ a bag kinda pricey. You do have to rinse it tho .Put 2 bags in my 150 with out rinsing it (don't know what i was thinking) water got cloudy for a while >.<. Love the look of the Paver's sand and at that price going to put that in my next tank.

Beautiful picture, what kind of fish is that? Of the two sands which do you consider the easiest to maintain or siphon?

Oh wow that must have been awful! I poured a bunch of gravel into my 75 gallon with out rinsing and that was terrible, I couldn't imagine sand.:jaw-dropp

That's my male Australoheros Oblongum in non-breading colors.

Both are pretty good. The finer grains of the pavers settle down and the larger pebbles stay on top.
