Sup guys, Got a 75G with white sand. I wanted natural but no one had it. The white, as you probably know is bright as can be. I am debating whether or not I should do a 50/50 white-black mix or less leaning more towards white. What do you guys think? If you have it, pics would be great. I have a few Geophagus whos colors I think would shine more with a darker substrate.

I switched my 75 from black to white... Didn't get 100% of the black sand out and now I hate the look of it due to small black dots in the white.... Given mine isn't 50/50 but just my 2 cents

hey, i had this problem when setting up my tank. not sure how important it is to you to have just sand. I use white pool filter sand in my tanks because its cheap. To add some different texture and color to it i add a few small bags of mixed gravel. I find it adds a more natural effect. I'v also had pretty good luck growing easy plants like crypts and vals.... just an idea for you.

S stoned_fish , I was going to do pool filter sand but when I went to the pool store the employee where said the size of the grains would cause injury to the fish. He said he raised and owns fish so I kinda took his word for it and went with actual aquarium sand.

I mean the gravel is nice mix and what not, but the ease of siphoning the tank with just sand cant be beat.

I know it' a pain but remove all the white and get a 25 pound bag of black nat geo sand. You will not regret it.

If you want to save some money go to tractor supply and get the black diamond blasting sand. It' more of a pain because you have to rinse it to avoid cloudy water but once you do it looks exactly like fish store sand. I'e been using it for about 2 years it does not harm the fish at all. Its 7 compared to 20 for fish store sand. Get the bag with all black letters not the red lettering.

My whole thing I'm just trying to confirm that this stuff isnt bad for the fish, considering all of them sift the sand, I dont want their gills damaged, or anything like that.

The pool guy should stick to pool care. Many including myself have used pool filter sand without any issues. Oddly enough, here in the Cali, I can’t find the white pool filter sand so settled for the tan. Works well one of my planted tanks. I’ve also used the black diamond blasting sand but wasn’t to my liking...it has a bit of a sheen to it, more glasslike up close.
