I was just curious since i was at the store and this guy said sand scratches acrylic tanks. So I wa splanning to put about 2 inches of sand in the bottom and I also use play sand from home depot and rinse it like a million times. this is going to be my main tank its a 240 but i dont want it all scratched up eventuallly

acrylic is extremely easy to scratch because it's actually a very soft material. even glass can be scratched by sand so you'll just have to be very careful when cleaning your tank.

:iagree:

My acrylic tank scratches when I look at it wrong.

try using a lighter kind of sand rather than play sand if you can or a heavier one so it stays put

:werd: I don't have acrylic, but am still VERY careful with sand vs. glass.

When buying your sand, look for a bag in the lot that is leaking at a corner (there is always at least one). Look at the grains of sand. They should be rounded like they came from a river bed, and not sharp or jagged from being crushed or ground together. Pool filter sand needs to be round but building sand can be mined or pulverized (sharp edges). Play sand should be round but I have seen it pulverized.
