Well I just got out of the local Cabella's and got my normal night crawler and earthworm staple for my Bowfin and found another tasty selection... sand shrimp-live too.

Soulda seen the cashier girl squirm when I showed her indeed, these were alive! (open lid and tap container and they wiggle slowly, lol)

So before I feed them to my bow, I ask, should I? they look bite sized for him and I really don't want to go with feeding big feeders for disease purposes.

Also, what else at the bait shop is good? No saltwater type fish stuff, but what about the other cured shrimp products they sold for fishing?

Thanks!

Don't use anything "cured" or bottled, they are going to have additives that likely aren't good for your fish. Most live foods should be ok, just be wary of the possibility of spreading parasites/diseases.

Very aware of the parasites problem-the reason I am looking for anything but gold fish.

That's what I thought about cured, good for attracting fish, but probably not so good FOR the fish. Like donuts!

I am thinking about adding a couple of the shrimp to my 55 gallon cold water tank (~60* atm use for feeder quarantine and dojo loach growing) to see if I can grow them!

I dont see any wrong with being feeding sand shrimp to your bowfin.

The bow ignored the first one...Not real surprised here...He took a little training before he hit worms regularly.

Tried the tropical tank, Oscars, intrigued, but no strike...The bichers on the contrary, thought that they were YUMMY!

So at least if the bowfin doesn't figure it out-they're not going to waste. ;)
