I currently just have some epoxy-coated gravel for my tank, but i may be picking up some cory cats, and they prefer sand or some kind of soft substrate. I am a total newbie at substrate selections for sand and such, so if anyone can recommend me what to get or what to look for, i'd appreciate it. it's gotta be black as well.

for black they sell this moon sand stuff at most lfs's but I f you want a more natural color you can't go wrong with pool filter sand

I could be wrong but I think Tahitian moon sand comes with a warning that its not suitable for bottom dwellers that like to dig as the pieces are very sharp.

alright, i just came across this Estes marine sand, in black, from a pet shop today. it was $3.49 for 5 lbs, so i got a bag. i heard someone talking about it in another thread. the sand seems like it would be a little rough for soft-bellied bottom dwellers, but i'm putting it in a strong water jet for awhile to wash it off and maybe get it a little smoother.

I have seen this used with rays and they are fine, you can't get a fish more picky about sand quality.

unless you've going to have water running over it for hundreds or thousands of years that's not going to work. it should be fine though. i prefer natural coloured sand, i've got 50lbs of playsand in my 29g, 16lbs of fine argonite in my 10g BW, and about 5lbs of sand from lake tahoe in my 11" cube.
