Sand Substrate Q's

Can you really just use sandbox sand from a hardware store for your tank? I want to make sure I get the right kind.

Also does it matter if poly's ingest some when feeding? Will it pass through ok?

Sand should pass thru its the main reason to use sand instead of gravel gravel can get ingested and weeeelllll it doesn't always turn out pleasantly.I don't trust hardware "sand" until I have checked it.pool filter sand is good or fine crushed gravel works well too-Anne

you can pick up pool filter sand from any pool store.. usually pretty cheap. I picked up a 50lbs bag for $8.00

I have pool filter sand it cost 5$ for 50 pounds of it , it looks really nice and I can actualy stick my gravel vacuum deep into the sand without sucking almost any of it up because of it's larger grain , I would call it the perfect aquarium sand , also it won't harm your bichir at all considering their natural environment is surrounded by sand.

Another vote for pool filter sand here. Namco, about $8 for 50/lbs. Looks natural and works great.
