I just set up a 75 with pool filter sand and a small amount of gravel for looks. It has a xp3 and a hot filter rested for a 70 gallon.. driftwood and plastic plants, fluorescent lighting for about 6 hours a day... My question is there any special maintenance for a sand bed that I should be concerned with? I plan on doing regular watt changes with a siphon hose...

Just don't suck up the sand with the siphon, you need to hold it away a little. Other than that it's real easy to keep clean compared to gravel.

I find sand easier to deal with, detritus rests on top instead of working its way in, so the vac can efficiently suck up mulm without being jammed into the substrate.

Fantastic looking tank.. first off!

2nd.. I have been using PFS in my 55g Pleco tank for a few months now, NO complaints. I have sand in all 3 of my tanks. So much easier to maintain than gravel!

And for the price of PFS, or even just "Medium" sand (which I have in my 2 other tanks). If you do suck any up, it is far from the end of the world. I end up sucking a bit of sand every time I vac the bottom, almost impossible not to...

I have regular aquarium sand in my present tank. I find that using a vacuum with a wide (mines almost 2 inches) tube the sand can be sucked into the tube and cleaned without being sucked up. Ill be using pool filter sand in my 180 next month and will be using the same vacuum.
