i am about to setup a new tank with my first TSN, and i was wondering if there would be a downside to using a sand substrate with a large bottom feeder?

any advice??

i use sand in the bottom of my pond...it has a 2xRTC, 1 lima, 1 RD, and one bluegill. for me there are no downsides....just got to wash your impeller out every week.

My Experience with Sand has been good... once I figured out a way of keeping the Sand from being kicked up into the Filter... (I put a jar over the intake) Or keep your intake as high up in the tank as possible anything closer than about 8"-10" from the sand and you'll have weekly filter cleaning duty

My TSN likes to eat rocks, spit them out, and pull out my live plates. My fear is that one day the rocks may kill her. I'd personally switch to sand, but my job prevents me from being able to keep up with constant impeller cleaning. It's bad enough they like to kick up my water-plant soil (crushed ceramic aquatic soil).

Beings we are on the "sand" subject, what about a fine rock or a crushed terracotta?

Kitties have soft underbellys, so if anything crushed has sharp edges it could cut up that soft underside, or as was my case, it could wear away their bottom barbels... Thats when I switched to a sand substrate

Should be nice, you know we'll want to see pics when you get the switch done :D
