hey guys im starting a new tank.....i just came back from the fish store and i got some "reptile sand" because they didnt have "aquarium" sand and i was wondering if this was the same thing???? it doesent say anywhere on the bag "do not use for aquariums" so i was really curious if i could use this type of sand without harming my oscars...

please help asap!!!!!!!!!!

well as dirty as oscars are i find it pretty hard to vacuum the sand because its so light and it gets sucked up in the syphon. playground sand works too. you can get it from home depot and i belive you get alot more for your money

help please its gettin late and i want to put this sand in but im not going to if im not sure if i can use this sand..PLEEEASSEEEE

i personally wouldnt take the rish. wait till morning and take it back and get some playground sand wash it thouroughly and that way you dont put yourself in a position to where you might lose your fish cuz that would suck

I agree^ You can get playground sand for a fraction of the cost. Exchange it for some fish stuff at the store. And depending on what kind of sand it is could be detrimental to your system. Some of them are dyed/really finely ground/glow in the dark etc. I think the Calci-sand (or something to that effect) has strontium, magnesium, calcium carbonate and other additives in it. Probably turn your water into a turbid slush.

I can`t help but wonder, why don`t you just leave the bottom bare? The Oscars would be just fine. Why the rush?
After using a number of different sands and sand mixes my advise would be pool filter sand. As already said, take that stuff back, Go get some PFS.
Last 4 bags I got, didn`t even wash it, clean right out of the bag. $6 @ HD.

DO NOT USE REPTILE SAND!

I recently bought a bag of "Vita-Sand" specifically meant for reptiles and it killed my girlfriend's betta within 12 hours. Playground sand isn't the #1 on my list for looks, but it is the safest...and cheapest.

After using playground sand, It works, looks okay, but if you have HOB or in tank filters and active or digging fish it is hell on your filters.
