Hey guys hows it going?
Need some info please on sand.

I plan on filling up a 270 gal tank for freshwater..I will be useing the black tahitian moon sand for this.

I would like roughly 2.5 to 3 inch of sand bed in bottom of tank.
How many bags of this stuff will I need for a bottom foot print of 8 foot long by 2 foot wide?

Sorry for the newbie ?-I have never filled this large of tank with sand before.
This will be for my huge TT Eel...should this be exceptable?

i would not use that i heard it is sharp.

1.5-2 pounds per gallon

thats a lot of money for substrate. i foudn quartz filter sand at my lfs. it was $20 for 50lbs and has a natural color to it. just maybe a cheaper suggestion.

i used play sand(home depot 3.99 for a large bag)rinses easier than i would have expected.

I have a non planted tank now but will switch to a planted tank down the road. I have heard that sand can trap gasses that can become harmfull to the tank and fish. What have heard about this, and how is this avoided? oh and is the play sand from home depot safe?
