I am in the process of changing the gravel in my 150g to sand. I would like to get sand that has a mix of white and black. Would 150 lbs be adequate for my tank? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I think 150 pounds might be too much. It depends how deep you want it to be. I'd be tempeted to start with 100 lbs.

EDIT: x3 (I type slow...)

x2 I have 150lbs in a 6'x2x footprint and it's about 3" deep or so. The footprint of your tank makes more of a difference than the gallons. What is the footprint (length and wide) of your tank?

sorry to hijack/borrow this tread. i am also switching to sand. im going to use playground sand, washed many times and soking for a day with dechlorinator. ive heard if you changed all the gravel to sand you might have a mini cycle. is it better if i switch half the gravel now and have in a week or two? also if i have a bare bottom tank, would that cause a mini cycle by adding sand?

thanks

i have a 180g thats 6ft w x 2ft w x 2ft t i filled it with a 50 pound bag..hope this helps..

bassin do you have a pic of your tank?

Im also having this delima on how much sand to use. I have a 51x22 tank(115ish gallon). Im setting it up on a shoestring budget so the less sand the better lol

i recently changed my gravel to sand in my 90 gallon and had no problems the only thing was the water was real dirty so I had to wait a while so that it could clear up I took out most of my fish while doing it including my discus and put them back in after the water cleared up. and I used a 50 lb bag of play sand washed it like 25 times.
