I have used pool filter sand for my sustrate for the last 4 years. I have recently purchased a new pup. motoro ray around 5 inches. never had issues with my other rays but he seems to have some redness on his underside. eating and very active. water is perfect. didnt know if possibly it could be the substrate. is non- silca pool filter sand okay to use with rays? thanks for your input.

To my knowledge it is quite common for pups to show some pink/red coloring when moved into their new tank. It would help if you could get some pictures so we could give our input on how serious it looks.

If he is eating and acting normally I wouldn't panic I have never heard of anyone having issues with pool filter sand and rays

It would also help if you could provide

Tank size
Filtration
PH
Ammonia
Nitrtite
Nitrate
tankmates
when and what he eats

and the depth of the sand bed which could be very vital

Totally agree with Johno, pups often have a pink underside.

I would test for ammonia daily for a week just to rule that out and check all of the other parameters just in case your older rays have got used to something odd in the water but i doubt it.

My motoro still looks a little pink underside and she is nearly a year old now.
