I have a 4" senegal bichir and will eventually be transferring him to my 100G. There's nothing in there right now i'm just about to start cycling it. Basically i was just wondering if the type of sand was very important or if i can just go grab some from the hardware store. I know ill have algae with that but i can deal with that.

Thank you

i bought a bag of sand from the hardware store .. i washed the sand thuroughly then added it to the tank..the water was merky for a cuple weeks. then sumbody told me to buy play sand. it cost me £3 for a huge bag that would fill a standard 3' tank easily.

i bought it from argos. i wudnt no the canadian equalavent.

its wrth the money. GET PLAY SAND.

i have pool filter sand as well, works great.

Play sand has a fair amount of clay and it's size is not quite as uniform as pool filter sand. Both work well but play sand takes a little longer to rinse clean....

Both are cheap but pool filter sand is a but more ready to use....

Thanks for the info! This was the first time asking a question and im really happy about all the responses, theres a pool store down the road, ill go check it out this weekend or am i better off going to a hardware store for this too?

I have used the bagged sand from the hardware store and pool filter sand. The PFS is much cleaner, it took a lot of effort to clean the regular sand, PFS just required a quick rinse.
