I live in an area where the only way to get Pool Filter Sand is to order it online and shipping on multiple fifty pound bags is pretty expensive. Because of this, my tanks all have Quikrete Playsand. A friend of mine decided to try out Quikrete All-purpose sand because it has a larger grain. So I decided to help him put it in his extra 55 gallon last night and snapped this pic.

Upon first opening the bag we realized we had a lot of rinsing ahead of us. This is by far the dirtiest sand I've ever seen. After rinsing, we ended up with roughly thirty pounds out of a fifty pound bag.

I definitely do not recommend using this sand. As you can see in the pic it's almost the same thing as Playsand but with larger, sharper pieces. The worst part is that it required double the rinsing that Playsand does and we lost a lot more sand. Next time, we'll be paying the shipping for PFS. If everything I've read is correct, it's well worth it.

Interesting?

couldn't you of picked up some playsand from lowes? they have some fine grain sand at ours.

Yeah. That's what I use. My friend who bought this stuff doesn't like it. That's why he got this stuff.

take away the ? on mine lol

the difference is it is crushed concrete/sand mix-to be used for sand/fill in making more concrete.this may be a problem for him.

I use very fine grained sand for my substrate,it looks very nice and the fish seem to like it better than the gravel they had before

Very interesting. he got the idea from a few different cichlid forums but, as we all know, Quikrete quality is very different from state to state. I'll have him make sure to keep an eye on it.
