:irked:ok, i know sand wouldnt work with a power head on the tube, but that about an airation stone sure would this work?#

I am wondering if you could do sand with a UG filter if you had a layer of polyfiber between the sand and filter plates. Don't think you could do otherwise, even with an air stone the sand would eventually all get pulled under the filter plates.

My first atempt with sand was in a 30g hex tank with a UG filter and powerhead. It looked alot like a snow globe.

Undergravel filtration is a waste anyhow. Just use sand and filter the tank with a powerfilter. Throw some plants in and you are in business.

I also think undergravel filters are useless...well not useless, but not worth it. I have a friend who swears by them, but I'll stick with my power filters.

Undergravel filters won't work with sand because you need water to pass through the sand which is difficult if your layer is thick. Then your sand is just going to fall through anyway so it is as if you did not have an undergravel filter at all. You could go the polyfiber route, but seriously I don't think it is worth the trouble.

Unlike many, I actually like UGF's... I don't have any but I still think they are a valuable asset (with reverse flow powerheads, not bubbles). With the small grain size you would have a terrible time with it, eventually you would have a bottom of sand with a tube and airstone sticking out, as the sand would "consume" the filter.

as far as i undestand, that would be a bad idea because you do not want trapped air under the sand, as anerobic bacteria can produce amounts of tocic gas that can kill your fish, if it leaks into the water

ok thanks fot the feedback. i have a gravel filter goin on at the moment, had to cover with slate peices as my parrot was digging and messing it up LOL oh welll

i have a feeling it would look like it was working.. however you would only be pulling water through a very small area that would erode clear in the first 5 minutes of use..

im a big fan of UG filters.... i like snails and ghost shrimp too though so who knows..

i was told you could use sand by a guy at a lfs. he told me he used that black kinda mesh stuff they use sometimes in gardening(i think to stop weeds?). i was going to try this as well but was wondering if reverse undergravel would work w/ sand. i just friggin hate vaccuming gravel, don't mind skimming the top but trying to get down deep just freaks my fish too much
