Sand VS River rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use sand because it's cleaner fish waste uneaten food ect Doesn't get trapped like with rocks. you don't have to worry about algae growing on it you can just stir the sand.you dont have to gravel vac. i think it looks better too. But sand can get in to filters and make them noisy. Always rinse the sand well and sink the bag to the bottom of the tank and let it spill out over the bottom don't just dump it in.

sand will look good if ure filter is good. lol i prefer gravel more because my vacuum just doesnt really work on sand and i dont know why. however, now i mix rocks and sand substrate in my tanks. gives a more natural look. :)

I've got stones for my substrate, and if I wasn't using rid-x there'd be a lot of build up underneath. even my 1500 gph RUGF couldn't keep it clean.
with the rid-x and the RUGF I'm happy with it, if I didn't have the RUGF and rid-x it would be quite the mess. there's no good way to clean it. I was (even with the RUGF) using a spare pump during water changes to blast the detritus into the water column to be siphoned out, but that left a fair bit in the tank.

Lol, none of them I am running a bare bottom setup and another one with just some handfuls of gravel, but if I had to choose one I would pick gravel, sand is often sucked by the filters and it can damage impellers and even the motor well in hobs, but it also depends on what kind of filter are you using. If you are running canisters or even a sump then you would have less problems with sand damaging the filter mechanism just place the intake tube as far as you can from the sand surface, if youre running hobs then I strongly disadvice sand.

My two cents.

Cheers.

I like the rocks, ya harder to clean but doable. I tried sand and I was always finding it in my filters.
