I have a 55g with gravel and I'd like to change over to sand I have an under gravel filter and a Penguin Power Filter 350B the combination seems to keep the fish happy and happy fish in a clear tank makes for many hours of starring at the tank. I think sand looks so much more classy and would like to switch over but I assume if I had to remove that under gravel filter as well it'll be a task not worth the work.

yeah that's what I figured given the name, would the sand be worth the task of the switch?

It depends on how long the UGFs have been running. I just switched out my 6 month old UGFs for a canister and it wasn't very difficult. Of course I left the new canister running while I changed it out to keep the water clean and it sucked up so much crap that it ruptured and spilled tons of water across the basement. The basement was was faux hardwood which then had to be entirely removed and the underlayment replaced but that was my fault for trying to save a few $ by buying a cheap knock off filter from e-bay DON'T BE CHEAP WHEN BUYING CANISTER FILTERS!!!!.

Anyway if the UGF is more than a few months old it's really best to do a full tear down of the tank, there is way more crap under that UGF than you think, I got away with leaving my fish in the tank but it was nasty and they weren't happy.
