Anyone used and had any problems with sand with oscars? I like sand now that I have it in my 150 Lake Malawi peacock tank and want to use it in the oscar tank I'm planning. I'm just curious if anyone has had any problems like them spitting it out near the filter intakes and jamming impellers, any issues at all.

I had no problems when I had an Oscar. I had it in a tank with black sand. The only problem that I came across was that he had a bit of HITH and when he went digging, the sand got trapped in there as it healed, but there wasn't much.

The only problem your goona run into is if it does indeed get into your filtration.
Keep your uptakes well above the sand.

What kind of filtration are you using?

That's what I figured. I have a Fluval FX5 on my 150 and I cut most of the intake pipe off so the bottom of the intake strainer is not even half way down the tank. I will do the same with the oscars. I will probably have 2 whisper 60s, and a Fluval 404, maybe another Fluval as well.

The other thing about sand is that it is going to make the fish's waste much more visible. While gravel lets the waste fall through the cracks, sand will not. IMO it makes cleaning easier, but if you know O's they poop constantly, and with sand, you will know it.

I do have a jag that would spit sand right into my filter intake... what a pain.
